Antarctic Balloon Flights for JACEE

The JACEE Collaboration

Collaboration list omitted

Abstract

JACEE has had three successful long-duration balloon flights (LDBF) in Antarctica, in four attempts. The latest flights, in December, 1994, provided 300 hours of exposure at approxmiately 5 g/cm2 residual overburden, for an array of 6 emulsion chamber modules with overall area 100 x 120 cm2. Antarctic LDBF techniques have reached a degree of maturity which permits great advances in the rate of data acquisition. We will describe the gondola, data-logging onboard electronics, procedures, and special aspects of flight operations in the Antarctic.
