JACEE-11

JACEE-11 and JACEE-12 were two flights in a series of long duration flights. JACEE-11 was launched mid-December 1993 and after a succesful circumpolar exposure failed to terminate and crashed through the ice only one quarter mile offshore of Ross Island (see illustration). Attempts were made to dredge for the gondola, but did not succeed. It is possible that useful data will still be obtainable if we can recover this payload next year.

JACEE-12 was launched and recovered in early January 1994. It is currently being analyzed.

For your viewing pleaseure, we have

  • A map of the flight paths of JACEE-11 and JACEE-12
  • Snapshots of the balloon being unrolled before launch, and as it is beginning to be inflated. When fully inflated and at altitude (120 kft), the balloon measured about 120 yards across, and was clearly visible from the ground.
  • A movie of the launch, transferred from Eric Zager's original video.
  • For those interested in the characteristics of the flight, an altitude profile is available. Hey! Have a look at the temperature profile while you're at it.
  • An image of the highest energy cascade (Dr. Takahashi estimates the energy as possibly being 1000TeV) as seen on the bottommost layer of X-ray film.
